Mid-18th Century Dutch Delft Wall Rack with Original Patinated Paint, c.1740–1760

Mid-18th Century Dutch Delft Wall Rack with Original Patinated Paint, c.1740–1760

18th-century Dutch Delft wall rack, c. 1740–1760, in its original painted finish, showing a richly timeworn surface with layered tones of blue, black, and green.

Meticulously cafted, this piece features a central arched niche framed by fluted uprights and a molded keystone, flanked by open compartments. Below, a row of divided cubby shelves is set beneath a shaped apron. A finely carved dentil cornice runs the full width of the top.

The paintwork displays a naturally patinated dark character, revealing its age through areas of surface wear, craquelure, and pigment layering in blacks, blues and greens beneath the darkly polished surface.

The rack was likely made in the Netherlands for displaying Delftware or pigment jars, and reflects the vernacular architectural style and painted aesthetic associated with mid-18th-century Dutch domestic interiors.

A practical and decorative object with sculptural presence and wonderful historical integrity.
