Alpine Splint Rushlight Candleholder c.1720-1750

Alpine Splint Rushlight Candleholder c.1720-1750

A charming primitive and diminutively formed Alpine Rushlight and candle holder c.1720-1750

Hand-forged from wrought iron with a spring-loaded grip for holding the splint or rushlight, and a ring for a candle above a heart shaped drip tray. The holder has a small curved handle for carrying, or hanging. And a simple but elegant twist to the main upright. The heart shaped tray may indicate it was created and given as a token of love.

Rushlights were made of rushes which were stripped of their outer layers, leaving a pith which was wound into a wick and possibly dipped in fat.

A wonderful example of primitive Folk Art, its simplicity so evocative. A perfect balance between utility and aesthetics, of form and function.
