Italian Carved Oak Guardian Angel c.1650

Italian Carved Oak Guardian Angel c.1650

A wonderful late 17th Century Italian sculpture of an Angel carved from oak, after Simone Cantarini’s “Guardian Angel Walking with Child” etching (PESARO 1612-VERONA 1648).

Like the work of Cantarini, the sculpture unites aspects of Italian classicism with a bold naturalism.

The sculptor has achieved an ethereal delicacy and a vibrant quality to the work. With emotive and life-like gestures, movement and expression to the features of the Guardian Angel and child.

The winged Angel tenderly holds the hand of the child and gestures to guide their way through life.

The sculpture is timeworn revealing deep carving and beautifully grained wood, giving the piece another dimension of naturalism with the display of raw natural material.  Original polychrome and gesso remnants of turquoise and white can be seen in some of the deftly carved drapes.

A touchingly poignant and emotive work of art.
