The quality of the carving on this lovely example is exceptional. Having large amounts of the original gilding and traces of the original polychrome still present which creates a time-worn opulent look, firing our imagination and taking us back to Venice at the turn of the 18th to Early 19th Century. A time when English Artisans and young Gentlemen were spending time in the City discovering its history, delights and wonders while on the famous Grand Tour around Europe.
It’s elegant and delicate backrest has gilded scrolls and rosettes and a central carved stylised acanthus fan motif.
And the arms are remarkable, with exuberant carved and gilded dolphins with looped tails as scrolled arms.
