Rare Late 19th c. Handyside Garden Urn No.26 and Plinth
A rare, sharply cast iron garden urn from the English Handyside Foundry. Featuring bacchant figures making wine and merriment, with grape bunch handles and a grape vine foliate rim. This urn is illustrated in the 1880 Handyside catalogue No. 26. Andrew Handyside bought the Britannia Iron Works in 1848, and manufactured several ornamental vases in classical purity, form and ornament. Receiving distinctions at the Great Exhibition in 1850, the quality of their casts were exceptional and became more exceptional with time. Size of urn. Composite plinth. Height of plinth and urn 126cm.
