‘The Crucifixion’ Old Master Oil on Canvas Late 17th/Early 18th Century

‘The Crucifixion’ Old Master Oil on Canvas Late 17th/Early 18th Century

A wonderful depiction of the Crucifixion of Christ. Late 17th/Early 18th Century.

This sublime and beautifully painted Northern European oil on canvas speaks to us across the centuries.

Typically Baroque in its style, with abundant movement in the billowing robes and the dark night sky, and the full-faced expressions of the watching disciples and followers of Jesus.

Worth noting is the oversized human skull Momento Mori placed at the base of the cross to remind us of our own mortality.

Dark and reflective, Christ’s luminous emaciated figure draped in a loin cloth, emerges from the shadows. His brow bleeds from his crown of thorns, his side pierced and bleeding from the Roman soldiers spear of destiny. A deeply moving, and yet hauntingly beautiful painting.
